Crime and the Fear of Crime

Scrutiny is a process that allows councillors to examine various functions of the council and its partners, to question how key decisions have been made and to champion issues of local concern to residents.  For this to take place effectively scrutiny needs the help of local residents, users of services, community organisations and, where relevant, local businesses.

As part of its business for 2010-11, the council’s Safer and Stronger Communities Scrutiny Panel has agreed to undertake a piece of work into ‘North Lincolnshire residents perceptions of the fear of crime’, to determine –

  • Why residents of North Lincolnshire appear more fearful of crime than the actual incidents of crime suggest, and
  • What North Lincolnshire Council and its partners are doing to address this?

Crime and fear of crime is probably the major issue of concern for the people of North Lincolnshire.  But while crime rates have fallen – people’s fear of crime has actually increased.

Fear of crime is related to people’s perceptions of how likely they are to be a victim of crime as well as the reality of the situation.

The council would like to hear your comments on crime and disorder in North Lincolnshire.  We want to hear how it affects your everyday life so we can understand why local people seem more fearful of crime than the actual incidence of crime suggests and what the council and its partners are going to do to address this.

The survey will focus on a range of issues including:

  • your experience of crime
  • your fear of crime - both person and property related
  • what measures you take to protect themselves and their property
  • the perception of local problems ranging from rubbish and traffic problems to issues connected with tramps/drunks and drug dealers.
